The Town of Sandwich is Preparing for Tropical Storm Henri – you should too!

Statement:

Sandwich Office Of Emergency Management  is closely monitoring the track of Tropical Storm Henri, which is expected to impact our area early Sunday and into Monday. Sandwich EM is coordinating with local, state, and federal response partners and planning for any anticipated impacts. We are also in regular contact with the National Weather Service for the latest information on the storm’s path and intensity.

Background:

Because tropical storms and hurricanes can impact every part of the state, all residents of Sandwich should begin preparations for Tropical Storm Henri now, by taking the following steps:

    Stay Informed: This is an evolving weather situation. Residents should monitor the forecast through local media, and messages from emergency officials. Sign up for your local reverse 911 system if your community has one. Also check to make sure your smartphone can receive emergency and public safety alerts.

·      Know if you live in an evacuation zone, or in an area that floods. We will see a variety of impacts from this storm – wind, rain, storm surge, and flooding, so if you are in an area that has flooding problems in past tropical storms or severe weather you should have a plan for what you will do if you’re asked to evacuate.

·      Gather supplies: Have at least 3 days’ worth of food, water, and other items to support you and your family members.

·      Create or Review a Family Emergency Plan: Establish meeting locations, an emergency contact plan, and a plan to evacuate if directed to do so.

·      Prepare for Power Outages: Make sure you have flashlights and extra batteries available. If you have a generator, ensure it is operational and review tips for operating it safely. Never use a generator or grill inside your home to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

·      Prepare for flooding: Heavy rains and storm surge can cause flooding. In addition to having an evacuation plan, make sure items stored in your basement are elevated to prevent damage. If you have a sump pump, check that it is working.

·      Plan now for specialized medical needs: If you need a use durable medical equipment that requires electricity, or if you have specialized medical needs or treatments that may be impacted by the storm, contact your medical provider or caregivers to discuss your situation and plan for your care needs before, during, and after the storm.

·      Finally, be a good neighbor. We all know people in our lives, whether they are family members or neighbors, who may need extra help preparing for this storm. Please check in with them regularly to make sure they are safe and have what they need.
