As you prepare for a safe and healthy summer season, the Sandwich Health Department is advising the community that in addition to regular weekly testing of the salt and freshwater bathing beaches, the Health Department will continue to monitor certain ponds for Cyanobacteria and will work with our Recreation Department and Natural Resources Department to ensure that swimmers are advised when an algae bloom is potentially hazard for Sandwich fresh water swimming.
At this time, there is no regulatory framework, law or regulation relative to Cyanobacteria, also known as Blue Green Algae. Beach goers and dog walkers should be aware that this Blue Green Algae can occur as water temperatures warm, in early summer. Cyanobacteria will appear to resemble a green paint in the water and may be visible in one area of a pond while another is not affected. Please watch for updates on pond health, ingestion of Cyanobacteria can cause serious illness for you and your pet.
Additional information about cyanobacteria is available from the State Department of Public Health, Barnstable County Department of Health and the Environment.
